Surgical Safety Check list Compliance

What is a Surgical Safety Check-list?

The check-list is a communication tool used by the operating room team to discuss information at three important phases during your surgery.

  • The Briefing Phase - this occurs before the anaesthetist provides any type of sedation or before staff prepare the patient for the procedure.
  • The Time Out Phase- Just before the start of a procedure.
  • The Debriefing Phase -While or just after surgery is finished.

The check-list is useful because it formally organizes all the previous safety checks performed by the surgical team in those phases. It is shown that better communication between team members lead to safer surgeries and better patient outcomes.

At WGH patient safety is a priority and we strongly support the use of surgical safety check-lists as a tool to enhance communications and safety in the operating room.
