Registered Nurse Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is the visual examination of the rectum and the lower third of the colon with a flexible endoscope.  No sedation is required for this procedure and the bowel preparation is simple with less risk to the patient. The endoscope is soft, flexible and lighted and air is used to insufflate the colon so that the nurse can visualize the colon wall.  The procedure is used to look for early signs of colon polyps and colon cancer.

Woodstock Hospital has specially trained nursing staff to perform the procedure increasing screening capacity for patients with an average risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the 2nd most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers). It is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer in men and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in women in Canada.

Patients require a referral from a family doctor or nurse practitioner using the following criteria:

  • Age 50-74
  • Due for colon screening (no FOBT within 2 years or colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy in 10 years)
  • No first degree family history of colon cancer
  • No personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns Disease)
  • No symptoms such as bleeding or change in bowel habits
