WGH offers a full mammography service that includes screening and diagnostic mammograms, stereotactic biopsies and pre-operative localization of breast lesions. Mammography, an X-ray image of the breast, is still the most important tool doctors have to diagnose breast cancer. Woodstock General Hospital’s wait time from mammogram to diagnosis to surgery for breast cancer patients is approximately five to seven weeks. This is one of the best respon se times in the province.

The unique ability to enlarge or highlight certain areas of the image allows radiologists to view and diagnose more effectively. Breast images can be magnified and the contrast can be lightened or darkened. In addition, the black and white image can be reversed, helping to detect microcalcifications, which is like revealing a grain of salt in a ball of clay.

Digital images give better visibility of the breast, particularly near the skin line, chest wall and in women with dense breast tissue. Digital images can be immediately viewed by other physicians, radiologists or specialists, in other locations within the Thames Valley Health Care System.

Your physician's office will make the appointment for you through Central Booking at WGH and will give you a mammography/breast requistion that documents the exam requested, the clinical information and any preparations required for the exam. Also, bring a list of your current medications to your appointment. You must bring this requistion and your Health card to your appointment. The exam will not be performed if there is no requistion for the exam. The radiologist will interpret the exam and the results will be sent to your physician within 3 to 5 working days.
